So, we made the decision to compose the movie for a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.
Your typical widescreen image (HD TVs and what-not) is 16×9, which translates to 1.78:1 (roughly). But there are other sizes as well. Even with a widescreen TV, you may find some DVDs still have to letterbox movies to get them to fit.
Anyway, we decided to go 2.35:1 because we felt it would offer some nice compositional choices with 3 or more characters in frame at the same time.
Here is a shot from the film – not exactly a great example of this, but good enough.
Below you will see the original image, and then the same image with a 2.35:1 letterbox applied to it.
You may also see yourself if you were an extra in the party scene…
